For decades, women have been told:

“Birth is dangerous, unpredictable, and needs medical management to be safe.”But let’s be clear: Birth is a biological process, not a medical condition.

Now, does that mean birth is always easy or risk-free? Of course not.Does that mean all medical intervention is bad? No—sometimes, it’s necessary and life-saving.

But here’s the key difference:

The maternity system doesn’t just step in when birth truly needs help. It steps in as a default, even when things are progressing normally.

And when birth is managed by routine rather than individual need, that’s when problems start happening that might not have happened otherwise.

Why the Maternity System is Built on Fear, Not Trust

If birth is a biological process, why is there so much fear and medical control around it? The answer: Risk management. The modern maternity system isn’t just built around helping women birth safely—it’s also built around minimising legal risk, following hospital protocols, and keeping things efficient.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

Hospitals put time limits on labour → Even when there’s no medical reason to rush it.💉 Interventions are used “just in case” → Even if they increase the risk of complications.📋 Policies override personal decisions → Because following “guidelines” is safer for the hospital than personalising care.

This doesn’t mean doctors and midwives don’t care. It means they’re working within a system that prioritises protocol over physiology.

Most women walk into birth expecting to be guided and supported.

But instead, they often experience:
