The Mask We Wear

Every mammal needs attachment to survive. A baby cannot feed itself, regulate its nervous system, or protect its own body. Without connection, it dies. That is why attachment always wins.

When we are born to parents carrying their own unhealed wounds, the child quickly learns that authenticity can threaten connection. If our feelings are too loud, if our needs are inconvenient, if our joy is overwhelming, the parent’s nervous system cannot hold it. So we compromise and trade authenticity for attachment, because survival depends on it.

This is how the mask is born. We don’t choose this consciously, but as a trauma response. It is the small body adapting to the environment, shaping itself to keep the parent close enough to stay alive. Over time that adaptation hardens into personality. The pleasing one, the achiever, the caretaker, the rebel. These are not random traits. They are strategies designed to manage the unpredictable field of the parent’s nervous system. And often it runs deeper still. We don’t just inherit eye colour or bone structure, we inherit nervous systems shaped by what came before. Unresolved grief, war, poverty, abandonment, persecution, all the things our ancestors never had the chance or support to heal remain in the body and get passed forward. A mother who flinches at anger may be carrying the echo of her own father’s violence. A father who cannot tolerate sadness may be repeating what his own parents silenced in him.

When a child arrives in such a field, they are adapting not only to their parents’ wounds but to generations of unprocessed pain. The mask is not just personal. It is ancestral. It carries the weight of what whole lineages could not face, and the child unconsciously wears it to keep the system intact.

This is where the ego takes root, as a set of archetypes that protect us from being abandoned, shamed, or ignored. They are brilliant adaptations. They kept us here. But as adults, those same masks begin to limit us.

Egoic Archetypes

Dr Shefali Tsabary speaks powerfully about this in her book A Radical Awakening. She describes how the ego shapes itself into archetypes, the perfectionist, the martyr, the caretaker, the rebel, all roles designed to protect the child from the terror of losing connection. At the time, they are genius. They keep the nervous system regulated enough to survive.

The problem is we forget they were never who we really were. We confuse the mask for the face. We build careers, marriages, even entire identities around them. And because these roles are rooted in fear, they come at a cost: chronic stress, anxiety, broken relationships, cycles of shame and burnout.

The archetype that once saved us becomes the cage we can’t see we are living in.

Some of the most common archetypes look like this:

The Pleaser

The child who learned that love comes when they keep everyone happy. They smile when they don’t mean it, soften their voice to avoid conflict, and say yes when every part of them is screaming no. As adults, pleasers struggle to know what they actually want, because their attention is always scanning for what will make others comfortable.

The Perfectionist

The one who discovered early that mistakes brought shame, so they became flawless. Every detail under control, every grade, every achievement. As adults, perfectionists hold themselves to impossible standards. Their worth is tied to performance. Rest feels unsafe, failure unthinkable.

The Martyr

The child who learned that their needs were too much, so they disappeared into service. They became the helper, the caretaker, the one who sacrificed so everyone else could manage. As adults, martyrs are exhausted but unable to stop. Saying no feels like betrayal, even when they are running on empty.

The Rebel

The one who refused to comply. Their strategy was to oppose, to resist, to push back against control. It kept them intact when submission felt like death. As adults, rebels often sabotage stability because authority of any kind feels threatening. They equate freedom with defiance, even when it costs them peace.

Each archetype began as protection. None of them are wrong. They were the child’s way of staying attached. But when we confuse them for our true self, we end up living in survival long after the danger has passed.

Our True Nature

Beneath every archetype is something untouched. Call it essence, call it consciousness, call it the unconditioned self. Long before the mask, there was simply life moving through us, curious, playful, expansive, unafraid to express. That is our true nature.

Science points to it too. At birth, our nervous system is designed for openness. The infant brain is wired for exploration, creativity, connection. Cortisol levels are low, oxytocin and dopamine are high, and the whole body is primed for growth and bonding. Fear and contraction are learned later, when safety is inconsistent. In other words, stress physiology is acquired, not original.

Spiritual traditions describe the same thing in different language. The Buddhists call it Buddha-nature. The Christian mystics spoke of the divine spark. In quantum terms, it is coherence, the state where energy flows without resistance. Whatever name you give it, the truth is the same: beneath the mask we are already whole.

The work is not to build a new self, but to remember what was always there. When the mask loosens, what emerges is presence. A way of being that is lighter, freer, more creative. Not performance. Not defence. Simply life, lived directly.

Why the Mask Shapes Our Reality

1. The Psychological View

Before the age of seven or eight, a child’s brain spends most of its time in theta waves,the same state we enter in hypnosis. In that state there is no filter, no questioning, no ability to weigh up truth. Whatever is experienced in the environment, whatever words are spoken, whatever patterns are modelled, are absorbed whole. They become baseline reality.

If the baseline is that needs are ignored, the child concludes that needs don’t matter. If the baseline is chaos or volatility, the child learns to play small to avoid being a target. And if love is conditional, given only when the child performs, pleases, or excels, then the nervous system wires survival to performance rather than authenticity.

What is critical to understand is that the feeling we learned to avoid — panic, dread, disgust, abandonment, becomes the very feeling our body unconsciously seeks out in adulthood. It is familiar. The nervous system reads familiar as safe, even when it is destructive. This is why a person raised by a narcissistic parent may not register red flags in relationships. Their disgust reflex was numbed so early that what should repulse them instead feels like home. The body is not drawn to what is healthy. It is drawn to what is known.

This is programming. Until it is brought into awareness, the subconscious will keep replaying the same dynamics to maintain what it believes is survival.

Now imagine this multiplied across millions. Entire populations carrying unhealed wounds, unconsciously recreating the same cycles in their families, communities, governments. We don’t recognise it as the mirror it is, so we blame the mirror. Instead of seeing what is being shown, we go to war with it. We project outward blame, shame, demand others change, believing that if people behaved the way we prefer, we would finally be at peace. It is an illusion.

The truth is, peace can never be manufactured externally. When individuals turn inward and heal the original wound, the projection changes. The mirror softens. On both the micro level of our relationships and the macro level of society, what we see shifts when what we carry shifts. The wars outside end when the wars inside no longer need to be fought.

2. The Spiritual View

Every wisdom tradition speaks of our original essence. The Buddhists call it Buddha-nature. Christian mystics spoke of the divine spark. Sufis call it the Beloved. In Advaita Vedanta, it is simply the Self. Across languages and cultures the message is the same: beneath conditioning, beneath wounds, there is something whole and untouched.

But as children, when authenticity threatened attachment, we covered that essence. We put on the mask. We forgot. In spiritual language, the wound is the veil, the thin film that hides the radiance we were born with.

Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within” (Luke 17:21). Yet most of us spend our lives seeking it outside: in approval, in relationships, in possessions. The Hindu Upanishads remind us, “You are what your deep, driving desire is. As your desire is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny.” When the deep desire is survival, the destiny is a life built on masks.

Eckhart Tolle calls this the “pain body” the collection of unresolved emotional imprints that rise up again and again. He writes: “The pain that you create now is always some form of nonacceptance, some form of unconscious resistance to what is.” The pain body feeds on repetition, on re-enacting the very wounds we never healed.

From a spiritual perspective, our reality becomes the stage where the wound plays itself out until we remember. This is why Rumi said, “The wound is the place where the light enters you.” The mask is not just a survival strategy; it is also the invitation back home.

Many people interpret spirituality through the same wound that gave rise to the mask. In Christianity especially, this often shows up as black-and-white thinking: the belief that there is only one truth, one right path, and all others are wrong. From this place, the world is divided into saved and unsaved, righteous and sinful, good and evil.

That perspective may feel like certainty, but it is rooted in fear. Fear that if others are right, then I am lost. Fear that difference threatens safety. So the strategy becomes to fight the opposition in the name of righteousness. If we can destroy what we call “wrong,” then we will finally be safe.

But this is not the way of Jesus. Jesus never taught the defence of dogma. He taught presence. He met people where they were, without needing them to be wrong first. He said, “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Mark 12:31) not “love them once they agree with you.” He modelled compassion and non-attachment, not fear-based control.

The wound twists this teaching. It uses scripture as a shield. Instead of healing what is triggered within, we project it outward. We wage holy wars, sometimes literal, sometimes emotional, because the mask cannot tolerate ambiguity. It needs certainty to feel safe.

There is a difference between noticing from neutrality and reacting from fear. Neutrality means seeing clearly, recognising what is stirred within, tending to the wound, and then taking aligned action. Fear means needing others to be wrong so we can feel right. It means hiding behind text instead of living the spirit of it.

When spirituality is lived through the mask, it becomes another performance of the wound. When it is lived through presence, it becomes healing.

When we do not see this, we live as if the wound is the truth and the mask is who we are. We chase peace outside, in wars, in blame, in controlling others, forgetting that the “kingdom” was never outside to begin with. The forgetting is the wound. The remembering is the healing.

When we identify with anything external — a belief system, a role, even an opinion, we cling to it as if our life depends on it. And in a way, it does. Because the mask believes that without the external, there is nothing left.

True freedom is something else entirely. It is aligned presence. It is not identifying with form or concept, but living from the essence beneath them. It is allowing what you might call God, Source, or consciousness to move through you unhindered. When ego takes over, we loop. We blame. We need others to behave a certain way so that we can finally feel at peace.

If reading this stirs something in you, pause and ask: why am I outsourcing my peace to another? Where do my feelings take place inside or outside? The moment you remember the answer, you touch freedom.

3. The Quantum View

Quantum physics reveals a universe far less fixed than our eyes perceive. At the smallest scale, particles don’t behave like solid matter but like possibilities. In superposition, a particle exists in many states at once until it is observed. The act of observation collapses the wave into a single outcome. Reality, in this sense, is participatory. It is shaped not only by what is, but by what is perceived.

The many-worlds interpretation takes this further: instead of one reality collapsing, all possibilities unfold in parallel. Every choice, every observation, is a branching. From this perspective, life is not a single line but a vast web of potential timelines, each one real. The question becomes not “what is the truth?” but “which truth am I tuned into?”

String theory suggests the universe is woven not from particles but vibrating strings of energy, ten or more dimensions deep. Biocentrism, as Robert Lanza describes, flips the usual order — it is not that life emerges within the universe, but that the universe emerges through consciousness. Space and time are constructs of perception. Without a conscious observer, there is no “out there.”

Now bring this back to the mask. If reality is participatory, vibrational, and filtered through consciousness, then our wounds are not private burdens. They are organising principles. A child whose nervous system learned dread, rejection, or unworthiness does not only carry those feelings internally. They carry them as the lens through which potential collapses. They tune into the branch of reality that confirms the wound. They vibrate the string in a way that attracts what resonates.

When we live from the mask, we are entangled with survival frequencies. The world we meet is one of repetition — the same relationship dynamics, the same self-sabotage, the same scarcity. Not because fate decrees it, but because consciousness organises itself around coherence. The mask is coherent with fear, so fear is what it attracts.

When we return to presence, the field changes. The nervous system regulates, the brain and heart synchronise, coherence replaces chaos. In that state, the wave of potential collapses differently. We perceive opportunities we could not see before. We attract people and experiences aligned with our wholeness. We shift timelines.

Quantum physics does not say “thoughts create things” in the simplistic way it is often packaged. It says our state of consciousness determines which version of reality we interact with. Every moment is a branching. Healing is not only personal relief, it is a literal shift in the probability space we call life.

Darryl Anka, who channels Bashar, describes reality as nothing more than a projection of preference and state. The world we experience is not fixed, it is filtered through the energetic frequency we occupy. Fear, shame, lack, these collapse reality into timelines that match them. Gratitude, coherence, joy, these collapse into worlds that reflect those states.

From this perspective, we are not all living in the same world. Each of us is tuning into a version of reality that matches our vibration. This is why two people can walk through the same circumstance and have completely different experiences. One, anchored in fear, sees only threat. Another, anchored in coherence, perceives opportunity. Both are real, but they are parallel branches of possibility.

Most of us were never taught this. As children we were told the world simply is, and we must endure whatever hand we are dealt. It feels like Russian roulette, maybe we get lucky, maybe we don’t. But in truth, the trajectory of our lives is not chance. It is resonance. We move into the worlds that match the frequency we carry.

This principle is not only personal, it has been observed collectively. In the 1970s, researchers studying Transcendental Meditation reported what became known as the Maharishi Effect: when a critical mass of people entered deep meditative coherence, crime rates dropped, accidents reduced, even warfare softened. The collective field shifted in measurable ways.

The implication is staggering. If individual wounds shape individual realities, then collective wounds shape collective realities. And if healing shifts frequency, then personal healing is not private at all. It is planetary. Every time one person loosens their mask, they move into a new world, and the field we share tilts closer to coherence.

Reflection Practice: Meeting the Mask

Don’t concern yourseld with stripping away your identity or forcing yourself to be authentic in every moment. That would only be another mask, the mask of “spiritual purity.” What we’re doing here is subtler. We’re learning to see the mask while it’s happening, to feel its roots in the body, and to glimpse what lies beneath it.

Step 1. Catch the Shift

Throughout your day, watch for the small moments when you bend yourself out of shape. Maybe you soften your “no” into a “maybe.” Maybe you tidy the room before someone arrives even though you’re exhausted. Maybe you over-explain a simple decision. These tiny movements are the mask in action. Don’t judge them. Just catch them.

Step 2. Feel It in the Body

When you notice the mask, pause. Drop attention into your body. Where do you feel it? A tightening of the jaw? A flutter in the stomach? A tension across the chest? Stay with the sensation for a breath or two. This is your nervous system remembering what it once had to do to keep attachment secure.

Step 3. Name the Archetype

Quietly name what you see. Pleaser perfectionist, rebel, martyr, achiever. Whatever it is, acknowledge it as a role, not as you. This naming begins to separate the mask from the essence.

Step 4. Remember Your Essence

Bring your hand to your heart or belly. Imagine the child you once were, before the mask. Picture their play, their joy, their unfiltered curiosity. Breathe as if you are breathing into them. Whisper: I see you. You are safe now. Don’t look at this as analysis, just reintroduce the nervous system to a state of safety it once knew.

Step 5. Notice the Frequency

From a quantum lens, feel the difference in vibration. The mask contracts, it is narrow, tense, repetitive. The essence expands, it feels softer, more open, more coherent. If you can, imagine the two states as radio stations. Ask yourself: which one am I tuned to right now? Which one do I prefer to broadcast?

Step 6. Journal the Mirrors

At the end of the day, write down one or two moments when you noticed the mask. Not to criticise, but to observe. Then reflect: how did reality mirror this? Did the mask attract frustration, misunderstanding, or exhaustion? Did the glimpse of essence attract softness or connection? This is how you begin to see the link between inner state and outer projection.

Don’t concern yourslf with abolishing the mask this week. It is about seeing it clearly enough that choice begins to return. Each time you notice, you create a tiny crack. Through those cracks, light enters.

When I first began my healing journey, I thought freedom lived in the soft fluffy places. I was convinced thato it was all about love, in spiritual ideas, in the feeling of being a ‘good’ person who tried her best. I wrapped myself in that identity because it felt clean and safe. I believed that if I kept my heart open enough and my intentions pure enough, life would meet me with the same energy. I didn’t realise that the identity I was so proud of was the very thing keeping me trapped.

I actually didn’t meet my freedom through light. It arrived through the deepest, darkest trenches of my psyche. After I stopped performing goodness and started looking directly at the parts of me I hoped no one would ever see. The uncomfortable truth is that every one of us is capable of anything! (Yes anything) We all live on a scale of one to ten and that scale shifts depending on the person who meets our unhealed places. The version of me who thought she was only kind, only generous, only loving was a character I was playing. She was not the whole of me.

The moment I laid everything out on the table, without justification or shame, something in me loosened. I was no longer identifying with an illusion of who I thought I should be, nor was I terrified of being exposed because I had already exposed myself to myself. Once you have met your own darkness honestly, the world loses its power to trigger you. You stop needing people to view you in a certain way because their perception no longer holds you hostage. You stop reacting to the past because you actually know the parts of you that created it.

To really ‘know thyself’ you have to walk through both your dark and your light. Anything less keeps you performing. Anything less keeps you defended. This is why I am writing this. It will be uncomfortable for some because it removes the safety of pretending. But for those who are ready to meet themselves fully, this is the doorway to freedom. The real kind that settles in your body and changes the way you move through the world.

The Identity We Use to Protect Ourselves

When you look at the collective consciousness right now, you can feel how tightly everyone is gripping their identity. It shows up in the need to be agreed with or how you desperately need the other sideto be ‘wrong’and the need to be validated. People are scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to hold onto who they think they are, terrified that if that image cracks, they will disappear. The irony is that we say we want to change the world, yet we refuse to look at ourselves. We point at the structures and the corruption and the collective shadows, while quietly believing there is nothing in us that needs to be seen.

You see this all over Substack and the wider freedom movement. People listing why they are superior. People insisting the other side must be wrong so they can stay right. Post after post of righteousness and purity tests. If you tick these boxes, I’ll keep you. If you tick those boxes, I’ll cut you out. They call it boundaries, but half the time it is fear dressed up as virtue. It is a performance of moral clarity that avoids the much harder question. What in me still reacts like this? What part of me needs an enemy in order to feel whole? What darkness am I refusing to meet?

It becomes painfully obvious when you read these posts closely. They are trying to change the world by rearranging the outside, yet they haven’t touched the internal terrain that creates their reactions. They think their clarity is consciousness, but it is only identity. They want to shift the collective without shifting themselves. It will never work. You cannot change the world by changing the world. You change the world by changing the parts of you that project your own unhealed material onto it.

Most people truly believe they are fine. I’m a good person. I pay my taxes. I’m kind to others. I do the right thing. And all of that might be true on the surface, yet none of it touches the deeper truth. What darkness still shapes your behaviour when you are tired, under pressure, abandoned, disagreed with, or unseen. Do you still act from your wounds. Do you feel the rise of panic when someone pulls away from you. Do you become defensive when someone reflects something uncomfortable. Do you shut down or lash out or withdraw. Don’t think of any of these as flaws, they are shadows we inherited, and they direct far more of our life than people want to believe.

95% of your behaviour is driven by unconscious patterns you do not yet recognise. That means most of the time you are not acting from choice but from nervous system memory. You are acting from old stories that were shaped before you even knew you were shaping them. Yet we build our entire identity around the idea that we consciously choose who we are. I’m a good mum. I’m a good dad. I’m talented. I’m successful. I’m spiritual. These labels feel secure because they give us something to hold onto, but they keep us imprisoned in form.

As long as you identify with the character you’re playing, you are not free. You are performing a version of yourself you hope will protect you. That is why people defend their identity so fiercely and are terrified of what lives underneath. You can see it clearly when someone reads these words and reacts with outrage. “No I don’t. I know I’m a good person, how dare you!” They believe they are defending truth, yet the reaction itself gives everything away. I cannot make you feel anything. I can only reveal what is unhealed in you. If a sentence touches nothing tender, it passes through cleanly. If it hits an identity you are clinging to, you will feel the rise immediately. The defensiveness is the old script speaking, the child inside insisting that their goodness must be protected because the alternative feels too unsafe to face. It is important to understand that this does not mean the opposite is true. You are not being asked to see yourself as a bad person. We do not need to look at any of this through a black and white lens. You are neither good nor bad in the way identity tries to frame it. You are simply reacting to what is unhealed. When that younger part rises, it is not confessing guilt or shame. It is showing you the exact place that still believes its goodness must be defended because the alternative once felt too unsafe to face. The reaction is not a verdict on who you are. It is a map back to the wound that shaped you. The real work begins when you stop organising your life around the performance and start meeting the parts of you that were never allowed to exist. When you lay everything out and let all of it be seen, the illusion loses its power. You stop needing to be right. You stop needing to be validated. You stop taking disagreement as an attack and stop collapsing when someone pulls away. You start responding from reality rather than fear.

If every person on the planet did this inner work, the collective would transform overnight.It wouldn’t happen through ideology or revolution but simply through coherence. A world full of people who are not triggered by their own shadows would be a world that no longer tears itself apart. But the collective cannot shift while individuals refuse to look inward. Until we are ready to question who we think we are, we will keep recreating the same loops. Our freedom will come from the same place it came for me. The moment you stop clinging to the identity you built and start meeting the truth of who you actually are.

The Truth About Human Behaviour

Once you stop clinging to the identity you built, it becomes impossible to keep pretending that humans fall into neat categories of good and bad. Behaviour does not come from morality in the slightest! Although we think it does,but no, thats performance. It comes from the places in us that have either been integrated or abandoned. That is why someone can behave with absolute integrity in one relationship and act like a stranger in another. The behaviour did not appear out of nowhere. A particular person touched a particular wound, and the unconscious stepped forward before consciousness had the chance to speak.People often cling to the idea that their behaviour comes from morality. They genuinely believe they act kindly because they follow rules, values or teachings that tell them who to be. Religion is the clearest example of this. Many people use it as a moral compass, imagining that the rules keep them good. They think the commandments, the teachings, the structure, the community are the reason they behave well. They don’t realise that this is performance long before it is truth.

Performance is what happens when you follow a rule instead of following your own awareness. It is when you behave kindly because you think you are supposed to, not because the kindness is coming from a coherent place inside you. It is apologising because the rule says you should, not because you have actually felt the impact of your actions. It is forgiving because you believe it makes you a good person, even though your body is still holding resentment. It is being generous so you can feel virtuous, rather than allowing generosity to rise from genuine overflow.

Behaviour does not come from morality in the slightest. Although we think it does, it doesn’t. Morality is often just the script. The real behaviour emerges from the unconscious. From the wounds you haven’t met, fears that still sit in your chest. From the younger self who learned who they had to be in order to stay safe. You can follow every rule and still react from fear. You can recite every teaching and still crumble under a trigger. You can call yourself spiritual, religious, kind or good and still behave in ways that shock you when the right dynamic meets the right wound.

This is why the performance cracks so easily. You can follow every moral instruction available and the moment someone touches your unhealed place, the shadow steps forward because you are a human being whose behaviour is shaped by what lives beneath the identity you’ve been protecting. Morality can guide you, but it cannot heal you. Only awareness can do that.

Every one of us carries the full spectrum of human behaviour. You are capable of tenderness and cruelty, compassion and withdrawal, generosity and manipulation, depending on which part of you is in the driving seat. This does not make you dangerous, it makes you human. Most people don’t want to acknowledge this because they still believe their identity is who they are. They think being a good person means they are incapable of darker impulses, and that belief keeps them fragile. If they never meet their own shadow, life will meet it for them.

You can feel this in the moments when you react in ways that shock you. The snap of irritation, coldness when someone gets too close, silent punishment when you feel ignored. The sudden jealousy that catches in your throat. These reactions do not come from your conscious self. They rise from the child who didn’t get their needs met, from the teenager who learned to protect themselves, from the adult who built armour out of personality traits. They rise from memory rather than intention.

This is why you cannot trust identity to tell you who you are. Identity is a story. Behaviour is a mirror. It reveals the parts of you you haven’t looked at, the fears you still carry, the wounds you still operate from.

The truth about human behaviour is simple. Until you have brought awareness to your unconscious patterns, those patterns will run your life. They will choose your partners, trigger your reactions,how you are as a parent, shape your boundaries, and dictate what you tolerate. You will think you are making conscious decisions, but most of the time you are replaying old fear. The moment you understand this, blame drops away. You stop labelling people as monsters. You stop imagining yourself as the exception. You start seeing the human condition clearly, without the filters of identity or moral superiority.

This clarity becomes the foundation for everything that comes next, because you cannot access genuine freedom until you understand what drives you. You must meet your darker impulses with honesty. You must recognise your capacity for harm without collapsing into guilt! You must acknowledge that you are not only light. When you accept this fully, you stop trying to prove yourself. You stop defending the version of you that never really existed. You stop treating your reactions as fate and start treating them as information.

This is where healing ACTUALLY begins. Don’t “try”to be better, tell the truth about who you already are. And who you already are is far more complex, far more layered, and far more capable of transformation than any identity you have ever clung to.

The Wound Behind the Trigger

Once you understand that most behaviour rises from the unconscious, it becomes easier to see that triggers are not accidents. They are windows into the places in you that were shaped long before you could protect yourself. Almost every adult carries one of three core wounds as their operating system.

Not enough/ Too much
Abandonment
Rejection.
These wounds form quietly through the emotional weather of childhood. Two siblings can grow up under the same roof, breathe the same air, witness the same arguments, yet shape entirely different meanings in their bodies.

A child who grows up feeling not enough didn’t necessarily hear those words. They felt it through emotional gaps. A parent too stressed to notice them. A home where approval was given through achievement rather than presence. A subtle sense that they had to earn love rather than rest in it. That child grows into an adult who still performs without realising it. They over-function. They give more than they have. They apologise for their needs. They read between the lines of every interaction searching for signs of disappointment. Their nervous system is always checking whether they measure up. They think this is personality but it isn’t. It is an old wound running the show.

A child who grows up feeling too much carries a different story. They learned early that their emotions were inconvenient. They were told to calm down or toughen up or stop being dramatic. They learned to shrink themselves to keep the peace. As adults they fear taking up space so they monitor their tone or second-guess every message before sending it. They feel guilt for having needs. They soften their truths so they don’t overwhelm anyone. Their shadow shows up as self-abandonment, yet they imagine they are simply being thoughtful. The body knows better.

The abandonment wound grows from inconsistency. A parent who was loving one moment and withdrawn the next. A home where moods were unpredictable. A childhood marked by waiting to see who the parent would be that day. These children become adults who chase connection and panic when it slips. Silence feels like a threat. Distance feels like danger. A slow reply can send their nervous system into old survival patterns. They become hyper-aware of changes in tone because their body remembers what inconsistency felt like, even if their mind has forgotten. They reckon what they are experiencing is intuition, yet half the time it is their younger self scanning for safety.

Rejection forms through misunderstanding rather than malice. A child expresses a feeling and is shut down. A need is dismissed or maybe truth is met with irritation. Over time, the child learns that parts of them are unacceptable. This breeds two different adaptations within the same household. One child tunes up their sensitivity, becoming hyper-attuned to emotional shifts, learning to read the room before they can even read words We call those people empaths, yet it was survival first. The other child tunes down their sensitivity, numbing themselves to avoid the sting of rejection. We call that narcissism, yet it came from the same wound. Two children, one storm, opposite adaptations.

Adults think life is random, but nothing you react to is random. You are subconsciously replaying the same script over and over again until you recognise the wound directing the scene. That is why someone’s tone can feel sharp even when the words are neutral. That is why a delayed text can send a jolt through your chest. That is why disagreement feels personal. It is not the message. It is the meaning your nervous system learned to attach to it.

This is the part people forget. Your feelings happen inside you. They rise from the old pathways your body carved out in childhood. When you say someone made you feel a certain way, pause. Did they. Or did they touch an unhealed place that was already living inside you.

The moment you see this clearly, everything changes. You stop treating your reactions as evidence that someone has wronged you. You start treating them as evidence of an old wound asking to be met. And once you understand the wound behind your triggers, the world loses its ability to pull you out of yourself. Nothing external can define you when you finally understand what is happening within.

A Moment of Pause

Before you read any further, it is worth acknowledging something here. You are taking in these words through the lens of your own perception. Your mind will hold onto the parts it wants and dismiss the parts it doesn’t. It will shape what I am saying to fit your narrative, just as mine is shaped by the lens I live through. Some of you will read this and think yes, I do that, I’m doing well. Others will feel a flicker of shame in your chest. Both responses are simply your conditioning trying to make sense of what you are absorbing.

So pause for a moment and notice how this is landing in your body. Notice the sensations more than the story. Notice where you tighten, where you soften, where you pull away, where you lean in. This is the work. Not agreeing or disagreeing with me, but witnessing the part of you that interprets the world through old experience. The lens matters more than the content. What you feel is the doorway into what is trying to be seen.

Meeting the Parts You Hide

There comes a point in this work where you can no longer avoid the parts of yourself you have spent a lifetime managing, polishing or disguising. These are the places you learned to hide because they didn’t feel welcome when you were small. The anger that was labelled rude. The sadness that was dismissed as dramatic. The fear that no one knew how to hold. The needs that were met with irritation. These parts haven’t magically disappeared. They simply grew quiet until the right dynamic wakes them up ie a “trigger”

If you pay attention, you can feel them rise in the exact moments you wish they wouldn’t. The sharpness in your tone when you feel misunderstood. The icy withdrawal when you’re hurt. The sudden defensiveness when someone questions your intention. The need to explain yourself endlessly or the impulse to fix, rescue or control. The jealousy that creeps in without warning. These reactions are the younger parts of you asking to be acknowledged after years of being exiled.

People imagine that facing these parts will make them worse, as if looking at your shadow will give it more power. The opposite happens. The more honestly you meet these parts, the less they need to surface in destructive ways. They stop hijacking situations because they are no longer fighting for your attention. They stop creating chaos because they finally feel seen. They stop dictating your behaviour because you are finally in the room with them.

The hardest truth to accept is that avoiding your shadow does not protect you, it actually controls you. It shapes your reactions when you least expect it,decides how close you let people get and chooses partners you have to heal from. It fuels behaviours you don’t recognise in yourself. And it convinces you that the trigger came from outside, when really it came from the parts of you that have never been allowed to speak.

Meeting the parts you hide is NOT an intellectual exercise! It is a felt experience in the body. Notice the tightness in your chest when someone pulls away. You feel the heat in your stomach when you’re challenged or sense the shrinking in your spine when you think you’ve disappointed someone. These sensations are the doorway. When you stay with them instead of running, explaining or attacking, something begins to shift. The younger part inside you starts to trust that you are finally capable of holding them.

This is the moment your life changes because you have stopped abandoning yourself. You begin to recognise where your reactions come from, and with that recognition comes choice. You no longer move on autopilot, perform or collapse. You become someone who can feel everything without being consumed by it.

Once you have met the parts you hide, you stop being scared of them. And when you are no longer scared of your own inner world, you are no longer scared of the outer one. That is the beginning of real freedom.

What Happens When You Face Your Darkness

There is a moment in this work that feels like a breaking point. Sit with the parts you never thought you would dare to face and you realise they are not monsters at all. They are fragments of you that grew in the dark because no one ever showed them the light. The moment you stop judging them, something shifts quietly inside your chest. The tension you’ve carried for years begins to loosen. The need to defend yourself softens and constant scanning for threat starts to settle.

When you face your darkness honestly, you stop being frightened of what might surface in you. You know the shape of your own reactions and the voice of your own fear as well as the pull of your old wounds. Nothing catches you off guard because you have already met the version of yourself you feared the most. Once you have looked your own demons in the eyes without flinching, the outside world loses its power to define you.

This is why triggers disappear because you are no longer avoiding the truth inside you. Someone’s silence no longer means abandonment. Someone’s tone no longer means rejection. Someone’s disagreement no longer feels like an attack. You see the old narrative rise in your body and you recognise it instantly. You feel the familiar sting, yet it no longer overwhelms you. You can sit with it without collapsing. You can breathe through it without reacting. The wound is still there, but it is no longer driving your behaviour.

What people never tell you is that the freedom you are looking for does not come from becoming bloody perfect! It comes from becoming whole. You cannot be whole if you are clinging to the light and denying the shadow. You can’t be whole if your identity depends on never making a mistake. That kind of identity is brittle! One crack and it shatters. But when you accept the full spectrum of who you are, you become grounded and stable. You become someone who no longer needs to perform goodness to feel worthy.

This work gives you a kind of peace that cannot be taken away. You stop needing people to see you in a certain way or shaping yourself around other people’s expectations. No more apologising for your existence. You move through life with a quiet confidence because your inner world is no longer a battlefield. There is no war between the parts you show and the parts you hide. There is only you.

Facing your darkness is not comfortable by any stretch of the immagination, but it is the only path to freedom. The moment everything in you is allowed to exist, you stop living in fear of being exposed. You become the one who sees yourself clearly, and once you can see yourself clearly, nothing outside of you can control your emotional state. That is the point where your life expands.

The End of Taking Things Personally

The moment you stop running from your own shadow, the world stops feeling so bloody sharp. You realise nothing outside of you is actually personal. Yeah, a comment might land awkwardly, a message might arrive with a tone you weren’t expecting, someone might withdraw or disagree or misunderstand you, but your nervous system no longer interprets it as danger. You can feel the rise inside your body without translating it into a story about your worth.

Most people think they are reacting to what someone said or did, but they are reacting to the meaning their younger self attached to it. The tone reminds them of a childhood moment. The silence echoes an old fear. The disagreement activates the part of them that once felt unseen. When you understand this, you stop blaming the world for touching your unhealed places, you longer blame the mirror!

This is where emotional freedom lives, in knowing yourself so fully that nothing can pull you out of your centre. The storm can move around you yet no longer moves through you. You respond from the present rather than the past and engage from clarity rather than fear. You see others through truth rather than projection. You stop taking things personally because you finally understand that most of what you feel originates inside you. And with that understanding comes a peace you cannot force, only grow into.
